Dual diagnosis treatment.
Both halves of it, at once.

Addiction rarely arrives on its own. Anxiety, depression, PTSD and old trauma travel with it — and treating one without the other is why so many people relapse. Ona treats both at the same time, on 270 private acres in Northern California.

Ona Treatment Center›Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Dual diagnosis · co-occurring disorders

Two problems, one person, one plan.

Dual diagnosis — also called co-occurring disorders — means living with a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time. Anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder and unprocessed trauma are the ones we see most often. Treating either one on its own tends not to hold.

The reason is not complicated. If someone has been drinking to quiet panic, taking the drink away leaves the panic exactly where it was. If someone's depression lifts in treatment but nothing has touched the using that deepens it, the depression returns with the next relapse. The two feed each other, so they have to be treated together.

Ona was built for that. Our dual diagnosis program treats the substance and what sits beneath it at the same time — gently, and at your pace — with a plan written for one person rather than for a diagnosis code, and a clinical team that holds both halves of the picture at once.

Who it helps. People who have been through treatment before and relapsed once life got loud again. People who were told to get sober first and come back about the trauma later. And people who have never been assessed for a mental health condition at all, because the drinking or the using was the only thing anyone ever looked at.

Dual diagnosis care runs through everything here: medical detox where it is needed, residential treatment on 270 private acres, and medication-assisted treatment where it helps. Confidential admissions, 24/7: (530) 869-6163.

Treated together — because treating one rarely holds.

What treatment actually looks like.

A dual diagnosis plan is not two programs bolted together. It is one clinical team, one plan, and therapy chosen for the whole picture rather than for whichever problem got named first.

“Living in Balance”

Our core curriculum — a nationally recognized, evidence-based program addressing physical, emotional and mental health, with life skills in stress management, communication and relapse prevention.

A proper assessment first

Medical and psychological, on arrival — so the plan is built on what is actually there rather than on a guess.

Step 1

One integrated treatment plan

Substance use and mental health held by the same team, reviewed together, not handed between departments.

Step 2

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Rewire the thought patterns that keep both the using and the anxiety or depression in motion.

CBT

Trauma-informed & art therapy

Gentle, creative pathways to process what words cannot yet reach — at your pace, never forced.

Trauma

Family systems therapy

Because a co-occurring disorder is lived by a household, and recovery can help repair one.

Family

Relapse-prevention planning

A written plan for the situations that were hardest before, including the mental health side of them.

Aftercare

Addiction is loud.
Healing begins in quiet.

If you're reading this for yourself — or for someone you love — you already know how heavy this has become. What you may not know is how different life can feel just a few weeks from now.

Ona was built for the whole story: not only the substance, but the anxiety, depression and trauma beneath it. Our dual diagnosis program treats both together — gently, and at your pace — because lasting recovery demands it.

“Our mission is to help every client step out of the dark, isolated cloud of addiction — and back into their family, their work, and their life.” The Ona Care Team

The questions people actually ask.

What is dual diagnosis treatment?
Dual diagnosis treatment addresses a substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental health condition at the same time, with one clinical team and one plan. Common pairings are addiction with anxiety, depression, PTSD or trauma. Treating them separately, or one after the other, is what tends to fail.
How do I know if I have a co-occurring disorder?
You may not, and that is normal — many people are never assessed because only the drinking or the using was ever looked at. A proper medical and psychological assessment on arrival is what answers it. If anxiety, low mood or flashbacks get worse when you stop, that is worth mentioning.
Should I treat the addiction or the mental health condition first?
Neither, in sequence. Treating them one at a time leaves whichever is untreated free to restart the other, which is the pattern behind a great many relapses. Integrated care treats both together from the beginning, which is how Ona's residential program is built.
What conditions does Ona treat alongside addiction?
Ona treats substance use together with co-occurring mental health conditions including PTSD, anxiety, depression and trauma. Therapy is drawn from CBT, ACT, REBT, family systems and trauma-informed and art therapy, chosen for your plan rather than applied from a standard list.
Is dual diagnosis treatment confidential?
Yes. Treatment records are protected by HIPAA and by 42 CFR Part 2, a federal law written specifically for substance use care and stricter than ordinary medical privacy. Ona does not confirm you are here to an employer, a family member or anyone else without your written consent.
