Medication-assisted treatment.
Medicine and the real work.

Medication can quiet the craving and the withdrawal. It cannot do the rest on its own — and at Ona it never has to, because it sits inside a full residential program on 270 private acres, with therapy, dual diagnosis care and a plan for afterwards.

Ona Treatment Center›Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Medication-assisted treatment

Medicine that steadies you, so the real work can start.

Medication-assisted treatment — usually shortened to MAT — means using an FDA-approved medication alongside counselling and behavioural therapy to treat opioid or alcohol use disorder. The medication is not the treatment on its own. It is what makes the rest of the treatment possible.

The first weeks of recovery are often dominated by craving and by the physical pull of withdrawal. Medication can quiet that noise — steadying the body enough that therapy, group work and family repair have somewhere to land. Used properly it is not swapping one drug for another; it is prescribed, monitored, evidence-based medical care.

At Ona, medication-assisted treatment is part of the clinical picture, and being on it does not disqualify you from anything. Whether it is right for you — and how any current prescription carries into residential treatment — is a medical conversation with our clinical team, who review it properly with you rather than deciding it from a form.

Who it helps. People with opioid or alcohol use disorder. People who have tried to stop before and found that willpower alone kept losing to withdrawal. And people already on a prescribed medication who need residential care and are afraid of being told to stop everything at the door.

MAT sits inside the wider program: medically supervised detox first where it is needed, then residential treatment on 270 private acres, with dual diagnosis care for whatever sits underneath. Confidential admissions, 24/7: (530) 869-6163.

Medication is a tool, not a verdict.

What to expect, step by step.

Nothing about medication is decided at a distance. It starts with a medical assessment, and it stays under review for as long as you are with us.

A medical decision, not a menu

Which medication — if any — is appropriate depends on the substance, your history and your own goals. That judgement belongs to our clinical team with you in the room, not to a website.

A full medical assessment

Substance history, current prescriptions, physical health and what has been tried before — before anything is prescribed or stopped.

Step 1

Withdrawal handled safely

Where detox is medically needed it comes first, supervised around the clock under ASAM clinical guidelines.

Step 2

Therapy alongside the medication

CBT, ACT, REBT and family systems work. Medication steadies the body so this can do its job.

Step 3

Co-occurring conditions treated too

Anxiety, depression, PTSD and trauma are treated at the same time, not saved for later.

Dual diagnosis

Regular review with your team

Benefit, dose and side effects reviewed as you go, rather than set once and forgotten about.

Ongoing

A written plan for afterwards

You leave with an aftercare and relapse-prevention plan that includes how care continues on the outside.

Aftercare

Addiction is loud.
Healing begins in quiet.

If you're reading this for yourself — or for someone you love — you already know how heavy this has become. What you may not know is how different life can feel just a few weeks from now.

Ona was built for the whole story: not only the substance, but the anxiety, depression and trauma beneath it. Our dual diagnosis program treats both together — gently, and at your pace — because lasting recovery demands it.

“Our mission is to help every client step out of the dark, isolated cloud of addiction — and back into their family, their work, and their life.” The Ona Care Team

The questions people actually ask.

What is medication-assisted treatment?
Medication-assisted treatment, or MAT, is the use of an FDA-approved medication together with counselling and behavioural therapy to treat opioid or alcohol use disorder. The medication reduces craving and withdrawal so that therapy and group work have a chance to land. It treats the whole person, not just the chemistry.
Is medication-assisted treatment just swapping one drug for another?
No. A prescribed, correctly dosed medication taken under medical supervision does not produce the cycle of intoxication, craving and consequence that defines addiction. It steadies the body so a person can sleep, work, attend therapy and rebuild relationships. That is the opposite of substitution.
Can I bring my current medication into residential treatment?
Being on medication-assisted treatment does not disqualify you from care at Ona. How an existing prescription carries into residential treatment is a medical conversation with our clinical team, who review your history properly with you. Bring the details of what you take to your first call.
How long does medication-assisted treatment last?
There is no fixed calendar. Some people need medication through the hardest weeks of withdrawal only; others continue much longer. It is a clinical decision reviewed with you as you go, not a rule. Ona's residential stay averages around thirty days, and medication planning continues into aftercare.
Does insurance cover medication-assisted treatment?
Usually, at least in part. Ona accepts most major private insurance — including Aetna, United Healthcare, Anthem / Blue Cross Blue Shield, TRICARE and TriWest — plus self-pay. Medi-Cal, Medicaid and Medicare are not accepted. A free, confidential benefits check tells you your real figure first.
